What is ABA?
"Applied behavior analysis (ABA) means the design, implementation, and evaluation of environmental modifications, using behavioral stimuli and consequences, to produce socially significant improvement in human behavior, including the use of direct observation, measurement, and functional analysis of the relationship between environment and behavior." - NYSED Office of the Professions
In other words, ABA is the application of behavioral principles to increase or decrease targeted behaviors. Behavior analysts ensure that the behaviors targeted will bring about meaningful change to the individual, are socially significant to the individual, and sensitive to the culture of his or her family and community. Behaviors that are observable and measurable are identified, and empirically-validated, research-based strategies and interventions are implemented. These interventions are then closely monitored for effectiveness, and decisions regarding interventions are data-based. Because behavior doesn't occur in a vacuum, behavior analysts also work to ensure that meaningful change takes place across multiple places and situations.
ABA can be used for almost anything, and can be found being implemented in homes, classrooms, businesses, and government programs. When applied to every day situations, ABA can help children acquire skills to become independent learners, communicators, and individuals.
