ABA and Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment Tips
Open enrollment is here! Most employers allow you to sign up for or change other job-based benefits during open enrollment, and New York State allows you to purchase a new plan directly through the Marketplace. For example, you may be able to:
sign up for or adjust applied behavior analysis (ABA) benefits. *A majority of insurance companies in NY offer ABA services to families with individuals with an autism diagnosis.
set up a flexible spending account or health savings account.
sign up for, or adjust the amount of, life insurance, disability insurance, vision insurance, dental insurance, legal insurance, supplemental insurance benefits, etc.
Generally, these changes are only allowed to be made during the open enrollment period, with an exception of extenuating circumstances (ex: lost your job, moved, had a baby, got divorced or married, and/or aged out of parent’s plan).
With open enrollment season underway, now is the perfect time to double check your benefits, and look into what is currently being covered, and not covered through your insurance. If you have a family member with an autism diagnosis, open enrollment is the perfect time to make sure that you have ABA benefits for that individual. ABA can be thought of as applying behavioral principles to behavioral goals and carefully measuring the results. The best part is that your insurance company will pay for that individual to receive these services!
